Add Video To Your Website

dotBiz logoChad Hurley and and Steve Chen, the creators of the video sharing website YouTube, were laughing all the way to the bank when they sold it to Google for around $1.5 billion. If Google is willing to spend that much money on a site that hadn’t even generated any revenue, I reckon it's time that we looked carefully at the potential of video.

If you already have a website for your business, adding video to it shouldn't be too difficult at all. But why should you think about using video in the first place? Well, everyone is different, and different people like to have information presented in different ways. Some will like text on the page or screen, others will like pictures and charts, while a lot of people like to see videos or presentations.

Taking that further, it would safe to assume that your potential customers like to have information presented to them in different ways. With broadband making download speeds much faster and video-editing software easily available, giving them a choice of ways to learn about your products and services has never been easier. At the moment, I'm working on putting some previous dotBiz articles onto video- just to give people that extra option.

Think about how you choose what to buy yourself. I'll bet that you'd be far more likely to select a product or service that you can actually see being demonstrated, or that is being explained by a real living person. By using video, you become more than just a website with text and pictures - you become a tangible business with real people.

You may also find that whatever you sell is actually easier to explain through a short presentation rather than writing text. When you start thinking about it in relation to your business, I'm sure that there would be a whole range of topics you could put into video. You could have various videos dotted around your website, each with a short paragraph explaining what it is about. We've also talked about blogging for business – what's to stop you keeping a video blog?

So, what kind of presentation are you going to make? For computer-based products and services, you'll probably find that going though an on-screen demonstration with spoken commentary is best. There are various packages that you can use for this:

If you're going to record yourself in front of the camera, you could start off with a digital camera that records video and use some video editing software to tidy it up. You could then join the YouTube revolution by uploading your video to their website and embedding it from there into yours.

Sound a bit complicated? Don't worry – if it still seems daunting, there are people who can help you get started - get in touch for more details. I'm ready for my close up, Mr DeMille.
